Music Careers: Television, Radio and Film

There are a lot of careers for musicians in the television and radio industry. The careers are scoring, editing, composing, licensing and copyright clearance. You can find these jobs at radio stations, television stations, organizations that program and distribute for radio and television, production houses, and post production companies.

Cable television networks has widened the number of opportunities for musicians, and radio and television are industries where you can grow provided that you have the experience, technical skills and a never quit attitude. People in the television, radio and film industries have a deep interest in media and music, are able to work well with others, can work under deadlines, and have musical talent.

Education
A college degree is not necessary, but should be obtained. Equivalent training is definitely needed, more so for production. Knowledge of two or more areas in the radio and television industries, and experience in at least one or more areas. You should definitely have experience working in a television station, or a radio station as an intern. Having experience in ensembles is also a plus.

Television
If you want to start a career in television, you must be sure that you really want it, and persevere toward this goal. In this industry, you must know how to be a problem solver, be open to constructive criticism and really be pleasant to be around. No one wants to work with anyone who gets an attitude when they tell them to do something their way. This is a career where you have to work with other people, so you have to be easy to work with.

A director wants a person very knowledgeable in technology and knows what their doing. You can't fail at any tasks, because you can always easily be replaced. Adhere to deadlines and you have to not only do the job, but do it well. A person who works in television must be creative. The person who can always give an audience something new to experience will keep their job for a long time.

Unfortunately, the starting salary will sometimes be low, because the field is extremely competitive. If this is something that you think that you will love doing, you will become a part of a thrilling industry. Your skills will improve, and in the end you will receive more financially. This type of job is not a 40 hour a week job. Hours will be long and you will practically have no social life.

Commercials
If what you want to be is a Commercial radio and television musician, your salary will be $227-$1650 on a 13-week cycle.

Film
There is money to be made in licensing songs for television and film. If you want to make a lot of money, you need a lot of income streams going on. You can make $25,000-$50,000 a year or more depending on the number of income streams you have. Here are a few websites, if you want to start licensing your music for television and film. Create a website that demonstrates the type of music that you write. Look for the music supervisor in the credits of every television show, or film that you like. Look for the names using a search engine, and then contact them and tell them to look at your website.
