Music Festivals in the UK

From dimly lit, crowded bars to large arenas and amphitheatres, jazz music is enjoyed worldwide in a variety of settings. The genre of jazz music has ushered in a number of excellent musicians throughout the years. Although it is hard to predict who might be the next big jazz musician, a good place to get a glimpse at some rising stars is by attending any of the various jazz festivals that take place all throughout the year and all over the world, including the United Kingdom.

Mostly Jazz Festival

One of the newest jazz festivals established in the United Kingdom, the Mostly Jazz Festival takes place in the month of July in Birmingham. Set in Moseley Park, the Mostly Jazz Festival provides multiple stages of jazz entertainment for patrons to enjoy. Events at the 2010 festival include musical performances by Sun Ra Arkestra, James Taylor Quartet, Lizzy Parks, Groove Cartel, Gary Potter Trio, Moon Unit, Birmingham Jazz Youth Group and many more.

Gypsy Guitar Festival

The International Gypsy Guitar Festival typical takes place between late July and early August in Gossington, Gloucestershire. Featured performers of the 2010 festival include Paulus Schafer, Gypsy Fire, Gary Potter, Inspector Gadjo and more. The International Gypsy Guitar Festival also hosts its very own "Gypsy Idol" contest, which gives local talent a chance to perform on stage.

Jazz on a Winter's Weekend

Jazz on a Winter's Weekend is an annual event hosted by the Southport Melodic Jazz Club every March in Southport. The 2010 event alone featured more than 10 concerts and featured over 80 musicians over the course of the weekend. Highlights of the 2010 festival include musical performances by Martin Drew's "New Couriers," The Joe Stilgoe Trio, The Al Wood Big Band, Cleveland Watkiss Trio and many more.

Glasgow International Jazz Festival

The Glasgow International Jazz Festival takes place during the month of June and features performances in a variety of venues around Glasgow. The festival is funded by several Glasgow-area groups such as the Glasgow City Council as well as a number of large corporate sponsorships. The Glasgow International Jazz Festival features jazz acts from all over the world.
