Music Float

It's 10 p.m. on a Wednesday night in May and I'm sitting in an inflatable kayak with my girlfriend on the San Diego Bay underneath a full moon. Legendary rock band Crosby, Stills, and Nash is performing their hit "Love the One You're With" about a hundred feet away from my kayak. Nearby, over 1,000 fans are enjoying the music in their warm, comfortable, and dry seats at the Humphreys Concerts by the Bay outdoor theatre, overlooking a beautiful moonlit harbor filled with expensive yachts. Their seats cost over $100 each. Our seats aren't quite so dry or warm, however they are free. In fact, I am sitting in a bit of water from the bay that is mixed with a little alcoholic pear cider. There is also some hummus on my pants. It's a little messy, but well worth it.

We are surrounded by about fifty other rafts and kayaks filled with ticketless people such as ourselves. They are relaxing to the music, sipping an adult beverage, and enjoying the peaceful night on the bay. To our right is a homemade, yet professionally constructed, floating bar, complete with padded barstools that double as beer coolers. In order to get a beer from their cooler, they must stand up from their seat and twist off the top of the cooler. I've seen bars on the water before, but not one that required oars. There are two men enjoying the concert from their floating bar, one with a giant afro wig. There is also a dog with them, wearing a fitted life preserver. Their floatation device seems to have been built specifically for this occasion and they are the envy of many.

Soon, the concert will end and we will paddle our way through the harbor and back to shore. However, we look forward to our next music float.

Music Float Recipe (San Diego style)

1 inflatable raft or kayak with oars
1 concert at Humphreys by the Bay
2 beers (add more or less to suit your taste)
1 sense of adventure

To prepare your music float, mix all of the above ingredients until well blended. Then, savor.
