Music Game with Kids: Dancing Statues Game

Chad R. Herman
There are often times we are sitting at the house wondering what we're going to do with the kids. You know you should play with your kids and build memories they will keep in their hearts forever. Every time you play with them, it gets stored in their heads for the rest of their life. You know they shouldn't be sitting there watching mind numbing TV. So here's a great game that you can play with kids, and even the adults can join in. This great game is called Dancing statues.

The only thing you need to play this game is a way to play music and at least two people. There needs to be one person who controls the music device. The device should have a way to lower and raise the volume, as well as music that everyone loves or at least likes. Before you start, make sure you have music that everyone can agree to. Sometimes it's hard to get everyone to agree on music, but it is easy to ask everyone if it is tolerable for the game. Many people will be OK with music if it's for a game, but not to just sit and listen to. If you have a lot of pre-schoolers, try to use music they would be interested or have at least heard at some point. This will get them into the game even more.

The volume is linked to the speed of the dancing. Therefore, if the volume is really really loud, it means the people have to dace faster and faster. Don't remind the dancers that there is still a higher volume, it will force them to dance even faster than they possibly can. To most adults this doesn't seem to be fun at all; however, to the younger ones, this is a great opportunity for fun and movement.

As soon as the song stops, the dancers have to become statues. When telling the dancers the rules, remind them that statues don't move at all. They don't laugh, they don't cough, they don't speak, and they don't fall. You can decide how you want to stop the music. You can hit the pause button, or just turn it down. However, if you turn it down, that means that they will slow their dancing down and then stop. That makes it a lot easier than an immediate stop.

You can score this game in a variety of ways. Each person hat isn't a statue has to sit down. However, with this method you have kids doing nothing. If you have been around kids, having two groups to look after and keep entertained is a lot of work, and really not worth it. Another way of scoring it is to tick off a count of who has been caught as unstatue like the most or least. You can also make this completely non-competitive and just a fun activity to dance and be statues. This game works on the kids dexterity as well as their fun time with the parents.
