Unfortunately many children and teenagers around the country do not have this opportunity to get involved musically. I know that because I was involved in music, I was more focused in my classes, developed strong interpersonal skills, and also was able to work pass an extreme case of low self-confidence. This is what music has to offer the children of today, but music is not always an option in many of our public school programs.
Funding cuts from several areas have deeply affected the school budgets and cause major cuts in music education spending and in some cases, has completely depleted entire music education budgets. Music is seen as an extra-curricular hobby that can be bypassed in favor of more money spent for other extra-curricular events, particularly sports.
Music has helped so many people in this world by helping them to express emotions and develop character that would otherwise remain hindered due to social and life circumstances. It has been proven that not only does Music develop talent and social skills, but it also increases academic performance. I am living proof that this is true.
For those who know little to nothing about music, step forward and take a leap of faith in your child or yourself. Music has an abundance of options for every person. If you cannot sing, pick up a drumstick and see if you can knock out some beats. If you have no desire to carry an instrument around, choose the piano and I can guarantee you'll find many opportunities to play it in church, community centers, senior centers and more.
Despite my limited studies of music therapy, I understand that for some people, music is the only way they can communicate. Music can become an outlet for feelings, just as a voice can express an opinion. Our children and our future generations need options to express these emotions as day-to-day events become continuously more unstable and erratic.
In a world filled with such hate and disregard for fellow man, we need to provide an opportunity for our children to connect with others. We need to embrace every chance we can for our children to experience the best lives they can.
Even if your musical knowledge or talent is small, take a big step and volunteer. Schools, community organizations, YMCA's and other local organizations need your help to keep the music educational programs strong. Become a voice in your community and step up to move people to support the arts. Our children are depending upon us to move forward towards change. One way to begin is by supporting them. One way to change their future is through music.
