Maintain Creative Control
When a lot of artists sign a major record deal, the lose all creative say so as far as what songs come out on their albums, what videos are promoted, as well as what singles are picked. By producing your own album and learning the in's and out's of mixing and perfecting techniques, it will make you a better all around artist as well as producer. By putting your name under the "Executive Producer" listing, you will be able to pick what songs are listed in what order, what songs are made into videos as well as where your songs will be distributed from. Even if you are signed to a major label, by being an Executive Producer, you will be able to keep all of your publishing rights to your music. This means that since there is no outside producer, you will get credit for the beat and lyrics of your song. All royalties for the album will go directly to you and you will be able to maximize your profits anytime your material is featured in public places and on the radio.
Save Lots of Money on Producer Fees
If you are signed to a major label and they won't give you the rights to produce your own album, you may want to think about going the independent route. Many major labels will want you to work with top rated producers, or "trendy" producers that produce what's "in". Major labels tend to protect their investments by only forking out money for solutions they know will work such as the hottest producers that make hits. Even though major labels are strongly against their artists working with unpopular producers, you must look at it from their point of view; they are strictly dedicated to making all of their money back that they spend on you. If you do get the chance to produce your own material, you will be saving yourself a world of fees. The most popular producers can charge up to $100,000 for the production of one song, that's crazy! Sure if someone is paying you $100,000 to produce their song it's great, however; you don't want to waste half of your budget working with one producer.
