Music Promotion Megatips: Perfecting Your Craft

Be a Perfectionist

Mr. New Material
Are you perfect at your musical talent, or are there some things you can improve on? In order to perfect your musical craft you must know the proper steps to take. Perfecting your craft is more than just touching up your skills; it's learning to master your skills so you can move onto the next level. Take for instance if you're an R&B singer and can't quite hold those high notes, you will need to practice and practice until you see improvement.

Impressing Yourself

Forget how you sound to other people right now. For now, all you need to think about is how you sound to yourself. You are truthfully your own best judge when it comes to your talents. A lot of times people will just "tell you want you wanna hear" when it comes to your abilities, skip the middle man! Look yourself in the mirror and sing, really sing those high notes and try to hold them the best you can. Once you find yourself straining you will need to rest, however; don't give up, keep going until you get it right. Most record labels are looking for musicians who are "ready" to take the next step. Back in the early 90's record labels used to get musicians with little or no talent and make them into stars, those days are over! You have to present yourself as someone who is already trained in the art of music, someone who can manage their time and talent and also handle their own business. Nobody is going to "hold your hand" in the music industry so without these key features, you're going to be stuck in the pool of "unsigned artist" for years.

The Art of Experimenting

Scared to do things you've never done before when it comes to music? If you are, you're putting yourself in a "box" so to say. Limiting yourself when it comes to music is possibly the worst thing you can do. Sure you genre of music may be hip hop, however; can you adapt to the rhythm and style of pop or rock? Placing yourself in one category of music will cause you to have a one dimensional mind when it comes to music. Another way of breaking this down would be to say "your money will be limited!". Know that if you can excel at your genre, you can make an "impact" in another one. For proof of this method, just look at a rap artist like Lil' Wayne, sure he rap's, however; with his song "lollipop" he flipped up his style and sung. Sure it was unexpected and even possibly out of place at first, however, fans from all genres of music accepted it which made it such a hot song. Now think of the requests he's probably getting to do R&B, Rock and even pop music!

Although I'm not in the music business, some of these pointers ring true in other industries. Practice and deciding their own talent levels are things everyone can apply to their lives.
