Music Review: "7th Symphony" by Apocalyptica

Wes Laurie
Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello metal group that does a lot of instrumental music and also has guest vocalists sing on some tunes. "7th Symphony" is an album they released in 2010 and was my first taste of them ever in 2011. I listened to the non-deluxe version and thus only had ten tracks to be critical of. Seeing as there are only ten tracks I think an out of ten scoring system is befitting.

I give the album "7th Symphony" by the band Apocalyptica a 5 1/2 out of 10 score. My song by song reasons why are below.

"At The Gates Of Manala": Seven minutes and something of decent metal instrumentals, but not sure what you want to do with that. Score half a point.

"End Of Me": A pretty good Bush impersonation by the vocalist because it is the vocalist from Bush; Gavin Rossdale . 'This love, this love is going to be the end of me." Good stuff. Score one point.

"Not Strong Enough": Strings and rock meet almost country song style vocal delivery. Interesting vibe. Score one point.

"2010": Another instrumental piece, faster and cooler than the opening one and the shorter run time actually makes it worthy of rocking out to at random. There are some cryptic voice and monster voice sounds deeper into the mix. Score one point Apocalyptica. .

"Beautiful": A short strings piece that more or less lives up to its title, but then that borders on being pretentious, right? Score half a point.

"Broken Pieces": The singer on this track is Lacey Strum from Flyleaf. It's a nice piece. Score one point.

"On The Rooftop With Quasimodo": Movie orchestra score, I could see that, but not noticeable without straining. Score one point to the critic.

"Bring Them To Light": The death metal vocalist from Gojira takes the mic on this one and it's in line with a Cradle Of Filth type of thing without the banshee screeching. It's not very interesting. Score one point critic.

"Sacra": Something to play while you LARP in gothic dungeon realms. Half a point to Apocalyptica.

"Rage Of Poseidon": Generic for them, a little cello, a lot of boring guitar. Score one point critic.
