Ten Hot Scenes...Ten Hot Songs

One of the best things about the [syndicated] hit HBO program, "Sex and the City", is the fabulous music. Executives on the show have displayed quite the penchant for choosing just the right ditty to accompany the show's key scenes. Here are a few examples over the seasons...

Season Two: Carrie and her pals are at a beach party in the Hamptons. They have been discussing the general differences between twenty-something and thirty-something women. As Fat Boy Slim's "Praise You" (a college anthem) plays delightfully in the background, it serves as a backdrop for all the merriment being had by all the twenty-somethings at the beach.

Season Three: The ladies are on Staten Island judging a fireman "beauty pageant." Quite appropriately, Donna Summer's hit 1970's disco tune "Hot Stuff" plays, as the firemen entertain the excited crowd.

Season Three: When Samantha decides that her new date is a bit too short for her taste, she invites him to Charlotte's "Bring your Ex" party in order to dump him off on someone more "compatible." Once the little guy realizes what Samantha is up to, he's livid, his insults fast becoming an invitation to go to bed with him. Samantha agrees to take her short guy up on his offer as Sheryl Crow's "A Change Will Do You Good" plays invitingly in the background.

Season Four: Carrie has traded a night in with Aidan and a bucket of KFC for a fun-filled "date" at Bungalow 8 with her new hot gay friend, Oliver. After being overlooked by Oliver in favor of the "scene," she decides to take herself home to Aidan. She struts out of the club to the tune of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made For Walking."

Season Four: Carrie and Aidan have reconciled after Carrie's affair; Carrie and Aidan are in the process of having an afternoon romp when the phone rings and it's Big. The song, "Natural High" from the Midnight Snack Volume 1 album plays seductively in the background. The song is perfect for drawing the viewer into the intimacy shared (and disrupted) between Aidan and Carrie.

Season Four: Samantha visits Richard's rooftop oasis for a little skinny dipping, where afterwards, they have a little midnight dance. As "By Your Side", by Sade plays, the viewer sees a rare, yet extremely tender moment pass between Samantha and Richard.

Season Four: Carrie is about to strut her stuff down the runway during a NY Fashion Week show. She looks stunning as she waits for her intro. The song begins---Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real", and she takes a few cool catwalk steps before falling flat on her face. The excitement of the song sets the tone for the hilarity of the fallen moment.

Season Five: It's fleet week! Carrie and the ladies (sans Miranda) have scored themselves a huge party full of sailors. As they enter the room which is literally bursting with festivities, Earth Wind & Fire's "Shining Star" begins. It's the perfect song to introduce the hilarious antics which take place once the ladies go about their separate ways.

Season Five: Carrie has been told that publishers would like to turn her collection of columns into a book. Samantha agrees to help her try out looks for the book's cover. As Carrie tries on Samantha's "raunchy" ensembles, "Music and Wine" by Blue Sixxplays in the background. The spirit of the electronic downtempo song is just peppy enough emphasize the creative (and personal) struggle between the two friends.

Season Six: Carrie has just come off of a serious slump wherein her belief in love and romance is waning. She meets Alexandr Petrovsky and proceeds to go on a date with him. His whimsy and charm have surprised her. And in the spirit of the evening, they finally kiss goodnight. "In the Waiting Line" (Zero 7) and its lazy seductiveness set the tone for the breaking romance between the May/December couple.
