Musical Wind Chimes Are so Relaxing

Viktoria Carrella
Musical wind chimes provide a natural and relaxing sonic experience in the comfort of one's own home. For thousands of years, wind-activated instruments have served to improve the feel of gardens, homes, back yards and front porches the world over. Dating back to some of the earliest human civilizations wind chimes have been a very popular and nearly ubiquitous home décor accessory.

The music made by musical wind chimes is produced either by the hanging chimes clinking against each other or against a block of some sort, usually wooden, suspended in the center of an arrangement of wind chimes. The chimes themselves are usually rods made of either metal, glass or wood. These rods are cut to a specific length in order to produce a specific pitch desired either by the maker or the purchaser of the chimes. The number of chimes suspended on the apparatus can vary wildly. For those who want a simple sound as few as four chimes can be used to build a set of musical wind chimes. For those who wish to have a more interesting sound in their garden or patio an untold number of chimes can be used to make up a set of musical wind chimes. With more chimes, more notes can be produced leading to a much richer sonic experience for the owner of a set of musical wind chimes.

In addition to being a great way to enhance the look and feel of one's home musical wind chimes have also been used by numerous recording artist, both live and in the studio to add texture to their music. Certain creative artists have been known to use musical wind chimes as a means of adding ambient sounds to their recordings. Others use them live on stage by hanging them from the neck of a guitar or on the drum set. This allows the chimes to produce sound sympathetic to the music being made on stage and sympathetic to the motion of the instrument or musician to which the musical wind chimes are attached. Many indie-rock or art-rock performers use this technique to add a unique sound to their music.

In addition, the fact that they are so inexpensive makes it easy to see why musical wind chimes have enjoyed so much continued popularity, not just with those wishing to enhance the feel of their home garden or patio but also with performers pushing the boundaries of their art.
