Musicals: Reasons for Giving Musicals a Chance

High School Musical. Three words that many people have come to hate and many people have come to love. Mothers loved it when it first came out because it was clean and it kept the kids entertained. Moms even learned the lyrics to the songs. Soon after a new hatred is found, hatred bred purely for High School Musical.

Musicals have been around a long time. These are not some new ploy from Disney, although Disney has used them to their advantage. Musicals have been hugely successful over the years and show no sign of slowing up. High School Musical 2 soon followed the first High School Musical. Then Hairspray made another appearance on the silver screen. Most recently Mama Mia hit the theaters. High School Musical 3 will also be released to theaters before the end of the year. This juggernaut has shown that musicals have their benefits but are also fun. And who knows, maybe your kid is the next Zac Efron.

Musicals combine the best of both worlds: acting and music/singing. Facial expressions are imperative for a successful show. Got rhythm? You better if you are going to be in a musical. Dancing is also a requirement along with moving with props. Singing may not be your kids best talent but with a couple vocals lessons you may be surprised. These are all talents that can be cultivated and grown.

Kids who were looking for an outlet would have been very skeptical if their parents had mentioned the word "musical". Now that musical movies have cleared the way over the past couple years, kids are more receptive to the idea. Kids may find that the stage is a wonderful way to express themselves and use their talents. Look into them at the local school, check local theaters, and your church may even be putting one together. If you live in a really small town and you do not find any musicals then consider getting one together yourself.

Okay, so you are sick to death of High School Musical but you may want to give them a second (or twentieth) look and admit that it may be something that your kid would enjoy. The stage is also a wonderful way to make friends which is just another reason to let your kid give it a shot. Consider it, talk it over, and enjoy the benefits of the stage.
