Musiq Soulchild's On My Radio Early Album Review

Musiq Wanders from His Neo-Soul Roots; Does it Work?

The Reviewer
Musiq Soulchild is one of the biggest artists in the genre of neo-soul. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native has long been known as one of the most consistent and brightest voices in the whole genre. However, on his latest effort On My Radio, Musiq Soulchild is branching out from the genre that made him a star. Will On My Radio be able to broaden Musiq Soulchild's appeal as an artist?

The first single off of On My Radio is the very progressive sounding Radio. The track is almost completely foreign from what you expect from Musiq Soulchild as an artist. The song features a bouncy 808 heavy track and a sing/rap style. The track might be seen like a diss to Musiq's longtime neo-soul fan-base, however the track is just Musiq experimenting with different genres.

The second single finds Musiq Soulchild returning back to his neo-soul roots with IfULeave. The track features R&B heavyweight Mary J. Blige. The song is a well written and delivered neo-soul track. Mary J. Blige's vocals blend nicely with Musiq Soulchild's which is of extreme importance on a duet.

SoBeautiful is more of the feel good neo-soul from Musiq Soulchild. His falsetto on the track might not be the strongest however the delivery works. The minimalist production is well done and lets the listener focus on the lyrics and vocal delivery.

Special is another solid neo-soul track. The song adds touches of other genres to the neo-soul pot and incorporates them into the mix in a successful manner. The strong point of the track is the well executed bridge.

MoneyRightis more of the progressive Musiq Soulchild. The song features elements of the current Musiq and the neo-soul legend. The drum track is incredibly heavy while there are neo-soul elements sprinkled throughout the melody and instrumentation.

IWannaBe is a solid neo-soul leaning track even though there are some elements of Caribbean influence on the track. The song is a happy little ditty that just works well. The vocal production stands out on the track along with the writing.

Until is another solid neo-soul track. The song sounds like a complete throwback to a different era in music and works extremely well. The chorus is especially strong.

On My Radio seems like a concept album from Musiq Soulchild. There are so many different genres covered on the album it is almost hard to keep up; from dirty south rap to neo-soul and everything in-between. Overall On My Radiois a fairly solid album. On My Radio gets 8 out of 10. If you are a fan of Musiq Soulchild make sure you check out On My Radio when it is available in stores on December 9th.
