Muskegon Area Parks: Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park

Kirby Warden
Most local residents of Muskegon County will be happy to tell tourists all about the history of Michigan's largest amusement park, Michigan's Adventure. They will fondly recall arriving at Deer Park Funland, as the park was known back then, with their parents and other family members with a buffet worth of food packed in the back of each vehicle; prepared to make a day of the park's adventures. Proudly and somewhat wistfully they will relate how everyone was able to pull out a small handful of dollar bills and some change to enter the park and experience all the rides at no extra cost. They may smile at the thought of their Logger's Run water ride and Corkscrew rollercoaster experiences.

Most residents will stop there before moving on to the park's commercial changes in the recent years. They were not aware of the old family petting zoo known simply as Deer Park that preceded the Funland so there will not be many, if any, introspective musings about it. And that is ok; because instead of just another family friendly petting zoo, Muskegon is home to the Michigan's largest amusement park complete with thrill rides, kiddy rides, a water park, prizes and food.

Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park is all about family fun. With an easy access route that leads directly to the nearest main highway only a short drive away, you don't have to worry about crumpled maps leading you into the middle of nowhere. Anything that you cannot find in the park you are sure to find along the main route; from camp grounds with lakes to hotels and restaurants. If you don't mind a ten minute drive, you can adventure through the City of Muskegon where you can visit a theatre of the arts, art and history museums, a library and all of your favorite and familiar shopping and fast food locations.

In Muskegon, it's all just a few street lights away.

But chances are, you'll be satisfied enough with what Michigan's Adventure has inside its fences. The amusement park is currently owned by the same people who run Cedar Pointe so you can be certain all the current safety regulations are being followed and every ride is properly tested before usage.

For a reasonable cost per person, (toddlers under the age of two are given free admittance) you get a full day's pass to the main adventure park as well as the water park. Check out the Michigan's Adventure website for group rates and seasonal passes. Did I mention that Lake Michigan beaches are only a few minutes away? If the Michigan's Adventure water park doesn't suite your needs, better bring your swim gear anyway; just in case.

Many people know that Michigan's Adventure used to be known as Deer Park Funland, but it is often forgotten that the park was once just a petting zoo simply known as Deer Park.
