The typical college gets about 114 square feet to live in. That means very little space to put all the necessities of life. This makes organization items essential for college. Here is a list of essential college organization items for your dorm room.
Bookcases can be used to organize a great deal of items. You can use a shelf for food, a shelf for school supplies, a shelf for books, and a shelf to hold some mementos. In addition to your bed, dresser, and desk, you may be able to fit one bookshelf in your room. If you choose a tall narrow bookshelf, you may be able to fit a couple. If you can raise your bed 40 inches or more, you can also put a few bookshelves under the bed. Just put them on gliders or wheels and you can pack them tightly under the bed like a library filing system. Just pull out the shelf you need, retrieve your item, and slide it back under the bed. The image will show how adding a series of shelves and raising the bed maximizes storage and organization space in the room.
Plastic three drawer bins can be used to hold your smallest, easiest to lose items. Jump drives, paper clips, fingernail files, paperclips, safety pins, and all of those things that are hard to find and easy to lose can be kept in them. They are also great for organizing bath and beauty supplies and can fit in closets, under dorm sinks, and under beds.
Baskets and bins will hold those things that don't stand up so neatly on bookshelves. Put your miscellaneous items in bins and label them accordingly so they will fit neatly on your shelves.
Binders are a great way to organize papers. Set up a binder with different categories. As you get your bills and other important mail, open them, use a 3 hole punch, and put them in the binder. Use clear sheet covers for items you don't want to put holes in. This will eliminate stacks and stacks of papers, and you will always be able to find your important information.
Magazine holders come in different colors and can hold your notebooks, magazines, and completed term papers. They also make great bookends. Magazine holders can also come in handy to help you organize information for your term papers. Just place on on the desk for each paper due. As you collect information you may want to use, place it in the appropriate magazine holder. They can hold books you used for research, periodicals, and more.
A shredder is important to the dorm room to help you get rid of excess mail and papers. Many people hold onto papers because they hold confidential information. Get rid of it by putting it through the shredder.
