Must See Historic Sites of New York

Guide to Historical Attractions for Tourists

Steve Thompson
New York, like most of the states in the northeast, is as rich in history as it is in culture and diversity. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the Empire State to visit the monuments, landmarks and museums that have shaped its history, but it would take weeks to experience them all. If you're planning a trip to New York in the near future, don't miss these amazing historic sites.

First one your list might be the Adirondack Museum, which was opened in August 1957. Located in scenic Blue Mountain Lake, New York, this historic site is one of the most diverse museums in the entire state, focusing on several different aspects of life in the Adirondacks. From boating to fishing, to fine arts and tourism, the Adirondack Museum has something for everyone. They have several events each year for both children and adults, and admission is $16 for adults and $8 for children.

After you've had your fill of the indoors, however, head south to Central Park in New York City to visit Cleopatra's Needle, which is one of several such obelisks in the world and has been a part of NYC since 1881. Originally erected by the ancient Egyptians and covered with fascinating hieroglyphs, the Needle is now an important part of New York history and something that no tourist should miss.

Of course, a trip through the famous New York historic sites wouldn't be complete without visiting Franklin D. Roosevelt's home in Hyde Park. Tours are given year-round (except for holidays), and visitors are treated to one hour of exploration into FDR's significant life, browsing the many rooms of his majestic home and learning about the things he accomplished there. Tickets cost $14 for adults, and children under the age of 15 are admitted free
