This message from Derek Powell...
Greetings All,
I wanted to let you know that I am creating all new paintings and drawings for an upcoming two-man art show/silent auction at the Stutz Art Space Gallery. 100% of proceeds for the silent auction portion of the show will benefit a great organization - Gleaners Food Bank. 20% of the proceeds of the remaining artwork will also benefit Gleaners. Gleaners plays a key role in distributing food to numerous food pantries in Central Indiana.
- Event: Power Over Poverty Art Exhibit and Silent Auction
- Artists: Derek Powell & Kevin Smola
- Opening Reception Date: Friday, August 7, 2009 (show runs until August 28)
- Time: 5-9 PM
- Location: Stutz Art Space Gallery, 212 W 10th St. B110 (Enter from 10th Street via alley), Indianapolis
Cost: Free Admission
More about the show:
In creating the new work for the exhibition, Derek Powell and Kevin Smola asked themselves what "poverty" truly means. Who are the poor among us? How is poverty different today than in the past? How can we as a community help those affected by poverty?
Powell and Smola's oil paintings and drawings play on concepts and stereotypes surrounding wealth and poverty. "Power over Poverty" opens Aug. 7 with a reception featuring a silent auction benefitting Gleaners Food Bank.
The timing couldn't be better. "Mid-summer is a particularly tough time when our shelves are quite bare," said Pamela Altmeyer, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank. "And this year it's especially challenging because we've seen a 30 to 50 percent increase in the number of requests for food, many from families who have never sought assistance."
I hope you can make it! I've really had a great time creating work for the show and am seeing some new directions emerge from exploring this theme. I've seen Kevin's work and it too, is really worth seeing.
Warm regards,
- Derek Powell
