Must See: Teddy Roosevelt House on Long Island

If you are a history buff or love Victorian houses to visit, then Teddy Roosevelt's House in Oyster Bay, Long Island in New York is the place for you. Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States. He had a lovely summer house called "Sagamore Hill" or better known as his "Summer White House". It is now a National Historic Site, and it is a museum to all visitors. There is much to enjoy at the Teddy Roosevelt House on Long Island.

Price of Admission

There is a price of admission in order to see the Theodore Roosevelt House. In order to go through the house you will need to go on a tour with a NPS Volunteer or a National Park Ranger as your guide. Tours are limited to 14 people per group. You can buy tickets at the Visitor Center Entrance. It costs $5 for adults, and children under the age of 15 are free. The first tour of the day begins at 10:00 a.m., and the last tour of the day is at 4:00 p.m.

Operating Schedule

There are certain days of the year when the Sagamore Hill is closed to the public. So make sure to double check that it is open before you plan a trip there. Right now it is operating on a Fall/Winter schedule. That means that the Theodore Roosevelt House and grounds are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It is open from Wednesday thru Sunday. The Visitor Center opens at 9 a.m. so you can buy tickets, and everything closes at 5 p.m. It is also closed on the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.

Sagamore Hill

Sagamore Hill is the main house that you can tour. It was Teddy Roosevelt's summer house. It is an amazing tour to take of a 19th century house. Not only is the house stunning inside, but you really get a real feel for what it must have been like for Theodore Roosevelt to live there. One of the great favorite's to see there is the great study. Also be sure to sit on the big porch and enjoy the beautiful views that Sagamore Hill displays.

The Roosevelt Museum

The Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard is actually free to the public. Feel free to go in and look around. You can watch movies there, and view the exhibits there at your leisure. It opens at 10:00 a.m., and it closes at 5 p.m. If you are a lover of history you will probably love visiting the Roosevelt Museum.

Other Things to Do

If you want to bring home something special to remember your visit, visit the bookstore that is on site. There are many things that may interest you. Children will delight in the teddy bears for sale. You may also take a walk on the spacious grounds. If you are hungry, bring a picnic lunch. There is a picnic area for you to enjoy. There are many fun things to see and do at the Teddy Roosevelt House on Long Island.
