Must-Have Affordable Pool Gear for Family Summer Fun

Underwater Pogo Sticks, Floating Coolers, and Water Aerobic Workouts

Kathy Browning
Having a swimming pool at home is fun, but adding a little pool gear can keep the family active throughout the summer months. A few years ago, we leased a pool home and began our quest for fun toys and accessories. It didn't take long to discover that pool gear was expensive, particularly when purchased at pool stores.

As one who prefers to shop online, I turned to the Internet to locate affordable pool gear suitable for my family as well as for our friends and their children. Not only was I able to find gear at discounted prices, I found a greater variety of toys, games, and accessories. Another option for saving money is to visit thrift stores and shop at yard sales.

Today, I'd like to share our favorite finds. These are the items that lasted the entire summer without breaking or being destroyed by chlorine. In addition to our favorites, each retailer offers a variety of pool toys and accessories that are certain to provide endless hours of fun in the sun.

Pool Sub Jumpa Underwater Pogo Stick

The Pool Sub Jumpa is an underwater pogo stick that provides a great workout for kids and adults. This Sub Jumpa has been a 'must-have' pool toy since it was voted Best Pool Product at the International Pool and Spa Expo in 2007.

Sub Jumpa has a large ball at the bottom that fills with water. Above the ball is a platform for your feet and a handle that extends about 2-1/2 feet. You grab the handle to bounce around the pool. The ball bounces off the bottom and wall sides and lets you do amazing underwater stunts.

This toy provides a serious workout and will keep the kids busy for a long time. The Sub Jumpa retails for $59.99, but I found it for $29.99, plus shipping at ToySpash.com.

Jarts Splash

Do you love yard darts? If so, you'll flip over Jarts Splash. Soft-tip darts are tossed through the floating target at the end of the pool. This game is ideal for family fun and will keep pool party guests entertained for hours on end.

Jarts Splash includes 4 water darts, floating target, and a mesh storage bag. The retail price is $23.99, but I found this product at Amazon.com for only $10.95. Better yet, it's available for free super saving shipping on orders over $25.

Pool Loungers, Floats, and Water Guns

There's nothing better than lounging around in the pool, but pool loungers can be quite costly with prices exceeding $100 for luxury models. A great source for locating affordable water lounges is PoolRafts.com.

Here you'll find loungers in the form of floating islands, castles, boat houses, water taxi, school bus, giant pretzel, and erupting volcano. Prices range from $31.95 to $119.95, plus shipping.

PoolRafts also offers a fun Log Flume Joust Set that includes 2 logs and 2 boppers. Just hop on and let the jousting begin. This set is ideal for kids 12 and under and offers hours of fun in the sun for less than $30.

Of course, no pool is complete without water guns and PoolRafts offers an assortment of water blasters ranging in price from $8.95 to $34.95.

Floating Beverage Cooler

A floating beverage cooler is a must-have pool accessory for those days when you're feeling lazy. Our favorite is the Big Bobber from PoolFloatSmart.com. As the name implies, this cooler is shaped like a fishing bobber. It holds up to twelve 12-ounce cans and enough ice to keep drinks cold for several hours.

Not only is the Big Bobber perfect for chilling beverages at the pool, it can be taken on boats and to the fishing dock. It is lightweight when empty and can easily be transported anyplace where there is water fun. The Big Bobber is made in the USA and sold at PoolFloatSmart.com for $39.00 plus shipping.

WaterGym Water Aerobics Exercise Videos

Water aerobics is a great way to tone and sculpt your body. As one who suffers from fibromyalgia, I found water aerobics to be the perfect form of exercise because it is known for increasing flexibility. I could spend twice as much time exercising and not be in pain for days on end afterward.

My favorite water aerobics exercise videos are the WaterGym series. This 3-part kit includes an instructional video, 73-minute workout video, and poolside cue cards printed on waterproof panels. The WaterGym workout helps you burn up to 800 calories without feeling the pain of a gym workout.

The WaterGym water aerobics exercise video is available for $29.99, plus shipping at WaterGym.com. This company also offers water flotation belts, water weights, and stainless steel water bottles.
