Must-See Attractions at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois

If you're looking for a one-day trip to a theme park, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois is one of the best choices. With more roller coasters than you can count on two hands and a variety of shopping and restaurant options, you'll have an action-packed day of adventure and fun for the entire family.

Depending on wait times and crowds, you could be standing in line a long time. Make sure you hit these rides to if you don't have time to ride every attraction.

Newer Roller Coasters

Roller coasters are the main attraction at Six Flags and are a big draw for older teens and adults. Superman, Batman, Raging Bull, Vertical Velocity and Demon are hands-down the best metal coasters at Six Flags. With multiple cars or short ride times, you're never in line for too long, or you're at least moving forward quickly as they expedite riders. Plus, if you're not a wooden roller coaster fan, these will suit your fancy more anyway.

Wooden Roller Coasters

American Eagle, Six Flags' first wooden roller coaster, is still worth the ride after this many years. But don't forget to also check out the Viper in Southwest Territory. It's one of the fastest wooden roller coasters on US soil, and features some terrifying plunges and neck-shattering turns.

Water Rides

Not everyone feels like getting a good soak in the middle of the day, but if you're in the mood for some splashing, check out the Yankee Clipper, a hydroplaning ride with several ups and downs and plenty of soakers. You'll also want to step in line for the Roaring Rapids, which are sure to half drown you in waves and give other family members a great opportunity to take a photo of your most horrible hairdo.

Non-thrill Rides

Yes, they do exist at Six Flags. However, if you typically steer clear of waves that go round and round, you're more limited. However, you might try Ragin' Cajun and the Whizzer, each of which are more family-oriented. Almost anything in the main County Fair area of the park is pretty safe as well, and you can take the younger ones there for the better part of the day.

Restaurants

Finding a restaurant in Six Flags is easy, but determining the food you're in the mood for is more difficult. We liked Claimjumpers for a quick lunch - we could split chicken tenders meals and get some tasty seasoned fries on the side. Also, ask for a glass of ice water instead of bottled water - all the restaurants at Six Flags give these away free.

For a great afternoon snack, check out the Ben and Jerry's or Cold Stone Creamery ice cream. It's not great on a hot stomach, but let your theme park gut settle for a while and you'll be a happier, cooler camper after a bowl of mint chocolate chip or cookies and cream ice cream.
