My 2011 New Year's Diet Resolutions

Shirley Norling
Losing some weight and getting my body into better shape so I can hopefully enjoy a longer, healthier life is a definite priority of mine for 2011. As the years are climbing faster then I like, which I can't do anything about, so are the pounds on my body, which I can do something about if I try. Those extra pounds that weren't there a year ago when I had my last medical exam just can't keep piling on if I want to stay healthy and feel good. Here are some 2011 diet New Year's resolutions I have that will hopefully help me to shape up somewhat during the coming year.

1. I want to try and develop a diet and eating plan that isn't too rigid to stick to: Many times when we hear the word diet it immediately makes us think of having to give up all those goodies that we really do enjoy, but we know that many of them help pile on those extra pounds. So my plan is to incorporate foods I really like with what is healthy.

2. 3 meals a day if at all possible: I tend to skip breakfast a lot. That's a big no-no I have been told many times. If I eat breakfast, I tend to stay away from those pastries during mid-morning coffee break. A light lunch that consists of foods from the basic food groups and then make dinner the meal that you totally enjoy after a hard days work.

3. Purchase a good diet cookbook: There are a number of very good diet books out there that are geared to exactly what type of diet you chose to go on. In the Good Housekeeping Jan.2011 edition, there's a section titled "Read, Eat, Lose-The New Diet Books" that has ideas on some good diet books to help you shape up in 2011.

4. Specific Diet Programs: My insurance company has a Nutrisystem discount program and that I'm going to check out. It helps us lose weight so we can enjoy life to the utmost. There are a number of other diet programs out there there like Weight-Watchers that you may want to check out if you're determined to get those pounds off but need a little help doing it.

5. Walk, Walk, Walk: I firmly believe that walking is one of the best forms of exercise out there today weather you're 16 or 60. It can be on a treadmill, walking with friends, at an exercise club or even walking up and down stairs, you can't beat a walking workout.

6. Check with your doctor for diet plans: Work with your doctor in developing a diet plan specifically for your own personal needs. I'm going to do that when I have annual physical exam right after the first of the new year.

My goal for 2011 is to be able to stick to these diet resolutions as best as as I can so the next time I step on that scale in the doctors office, the pounds will have gone done instead of up.
