When the leaves start changing colors and the apples ripen on my mom's fruit trees, it's time to bake some apple pies. I love to cook from scratch, so it's not uncommon for a few apple and pumpkin pies to pass through my oven before Thanksgiving.
One evening while warming a slice of apple pie after dinner, I noticed my husband giving me an odd look. Apparently, it's not common to add cheese to apple pie. I've always enjoyed my pie a la cheese. With that said, here are a few of my I-didn't-know-this-was-uncommon apple pie toppers. All recommendations are taste tested and approved -- and apparently a bit weird.
Apple Pie with Cheddar Cheese
If I'm going to the effort to warm up a piece of apple pie, I usually reach for a slice of cheddar cheese. Sharp cheddar tastes best. I've never attempted using a cellophane wrapped slice of American cheese. I just don't think that would taste right. After layering on the orange goodness, I warm the pie until the cheese melts and drips over the top of the pie. Yum!
Apple Pie with Nut Butter
Have you ever eaten slices of apple smeared with peanut butter? If you enjoy that flavor, try warming nut butter until it becomes sauce-like. Then, drizzle it over the top of the apple pie. I enjoy using peanut butter, but I think almond or cashew butter would also taste fabulous.
Apple Pie with Whipped Cream
I know whipped cream isn't uncommon. If you consider that white fluffy stuff in a tub or spray can to be whipped cream, then listen up. Most whipped toppings are whipped oil. Take an extra 3 minutes to prepare fresh whipped cream. Pour 1 cup of cold cream into an icy cold metal mixing bowl and whip with a hand blender until it nearly forms stiff peaks. Then add 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. If you want to flavor the cream, this is the time to add a dash of cinnamon, vanilla extract, almond extract or orange zest. Then give the cream a final whip until it forms stiff peaks. After showing my husband how easy this is to make, he requests it as a topping for nearly every dessert.
Apple Pie with Caramel
During the fall, I love a good caramel apple. But, they are often difficult to eat without getting sticky apple juice and caramel all over my face. Instead, I drizzle caramel sauce over apple pie. In a pinch, use caramel sundae topping from a jar. I prefer to make homemade caramel sauce since it takes less than 10 minutes on the stovetop. Plus, I can cool the extra and have chewy caramel candies on hand for at least a few days.
Next time you sit down to a piece of apple pie, skip the ice cream and ask for an uncommon topping. It might just become your new favorite apple pie topper. I have no idea how I tried apple pie topped with cheese -- perhaps it was even a dare -- but that's my favorite way to eat apple pie.

Post a CommentThanks for your comment, Mike! I'm glad I'm not the olny one who enjoys cheese on apple pie. And I love your walnut idea. I might have to add some chopped walnuts to my next dutch apple pie crumbly topping!
Cheese isn't that unusual an apple pie topping! I have also had it served to me this way. I definitely think you should stick with the hand-sliced sharp Cheddar here. As for the nut toppings, I think I would prefer walnuts.
