First we needed princess party hats. For this, we took card stock paper shaped it into a cone and taped it in place. We then attached ribbon beneath to tie the hats on their head and a strip of fabric coming down from the top of the cone. For the boys, we used the card stock and cut out crown shapes. My daughter helped me make these and was actually better than me at shaping the cones. When the kids got to the party they each got to pick out a hat and decorate it. It was a good activity while people were filing in and we were kinda waiting for everyone to get there. My daughter of course had a hat of honor which was a store-bought kid tiara.
We then had to pick out what kind of cake. To google we looked for inspiration. I pulled up and image search on google for castle cakes and princess cakes and had her look through them. I think she liked the idea that she got to pick out whichever one she wanted (within) reason. This turned out to be the most difficult part of party preparation. We had a huge castle cake that took about 4 boxes of cake mix and lots of decorating, which I am not talented at. But in the end it was an impressive cake.
We decided to set up stations in the back yard for everyone to play. We had stations such as pin the tail on the dragon, bean bag toss, a gauntlet (balance beam, trampoline, can stilts), and a pretend castle out of bedsheets. We also created a paper mache dragon pinata and had the kids take turns trying to "slay the dragon" with a wooden sword.
My daughter directed every step of the preparation and had a lot of fun getting it all ready. The actual day of the party she was a little overwhelmed with all the other kids and people around and was a little glad when it was over. But all in all it was a good day and we had a lot of fun. In the future I think we will limit the number of kids that come, but I like letting her help plan and prepare. Sometimes the fun is in the anticipation.
