My Awkward Valentine

Amber Patterson
I woke up anticipating the day. Thinking about just how great it would be was a wonderful start. At last, a Valentine's Day that I actually had a boyfriend. No more wondering if anyone would ask me to be there's, and being humiliated when they didn't. No more worrying if any of the boys liked me. No more searching relentlessly for the so-called secret admirers. No, this Valentine's Day was going to be epic. I had a boyfriend and surely he was going to be my valentine as well.

I arrived at school and made my way to homeroom where I saw him and immediately smiled a shy smile, waved and took my seat. The only thing I could think about was that he looked even cuter that day than he had the previous Friday when he'd asked me out. I began to day dream about asking him to be my valentine. I had it all worked out in my head. I had practiced it over and over the night before, memorizing it like a speech. There was no way he could say no to me. Lost in my fantasy, I almost didn't hear the teacher when she told us it was time to give out our cards.

I got up and began making my way across the room to where he sat. That's when I noticed her walking towards him too. We both reached his desk at the same time, handing him our cards and saying "will you be my valentine." A moment of panic ran through me when I heard the words come from her mouth. I looked at her in total surprise and she mirrored my response. Then we both turned to him and waited for his answer. He chose her. I was completely embarrased and I walked out of the room crying.

Lesson learned, never fall for the blue eyed blond, just because he's a blue eyed blond. Also, the fourth grade isn't the best place to search for your soul mate. The boys are much more mature in fifth grade. Yeah, right.
