My Biggest Interior Decorating Mistakes

Gina Pisano
Making interior decorating mistakes didn't cross my mind because I felt that I had done my homework and researched the best ways to optimize my living space. Since I also felt that my two huge dogs were both "neat as a pin," I didn't think twice when my interior decorating plan involved white carpeting and couches. That all changed when my 170 lb. St. Bernard dog was feeling under the weather one day, and decided that the pristine, soft and white carpeting would be the perfect backdrop for his bathroom. Ditto, when my 150 lb. Newfoundland acquired a bladder infection, the poor thing. White carpeting, I've learned, is not the best choice to have when you have pets, nor is a white couch. No matter how I've tried to keep my fur babies off the white couches, and despite my efforts to properly cover the couches with slip covers, my attempts were in vain.

Another one of my biggest interior decorating mistakes was the time when I painted my living rooms burnt sienna. The paint looked chic and trendy on the swatch, and even better when I opened the can. Once, it adorned the walls, however, I wished I would have listened to everyone who told me to choose a different color. To top if off, I got paint splotches all over my white carpeting and woodwork, even though I masked off the trim and covered the floors with a huge tarp. The dark walls looked depressing and were too much of a contrast to my white furniture and carpeting. It didn't matter after all, because I ended up removing the carpeting and donating my couches. Although not my best decorating move, it wasn't the biggest interior decorating mistake that I made.

I have to say, that one of the worse interior decorating mistakes that I made was when I decided to top my glass table with a huge, heavy, elephant water fountain. When I first saw the fountain in a specialty shop, I just had to have it. It was so heavy, that it took two guys to load it into my car. When I got it home, I couldn't wait to set it up, so I immediately asked my fiance to help me get it out of the car. When he saw my purchase, I think he got scared. He couldn't see himself sharing his living space with such an oddity, but I quickly changed his mind, or so I thought. As soon as we placed the fountain onto the glass table, we filled it with water and flipped the switch. How glorious and peaceful the water sounded as it flowed down the various levels of the fountain. Quite a contrast from the deafening crash that it produced when it fell through the glass and flooded the living room.
