My Boxing Pound for Pound Top 10 List as of March 2009

Jake Bard
Here is my list of Boxing's Best, The Pound For Pound Top 10 List in March 2009:

1. Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao (48-3-2 with 37 KO's): Without question, Manny Pacquiao is the new P4P #1 King after his surprising destruction of Boxing's "Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya. It is quite unbelievable that a natural flyweight could climb all the way up to welterweight (from 105 to 147) and beat one of boxing's best. PacMan is unbeaten in his last 9 fights with wins over Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz and Oscar De La Hoya. Next for Manny is a fight against Ricky Hatton on May 2.

2. Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1 with 36 KO's): Marquez moves up to #2 on the Pound for Pound List after his 9th round KO over Juan Diaz. It was an all-out war and a Fight of the Year Candidate. In the fight before Diaz, Marquez knocked out Joel Casamayor. Marquez is the current WBO, WBA, and IBO lightweight world champion as well as the RING Magazine Champ. He has fought Pacquiao twice and has a close decision loss and a draw against him. Future plans for Marquez are a third fight against Pacquiao or a Mayweather fight if he comes out of retirement.

3. "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-5 with 39 KO's): Mosley returned to the spotlight and the Pound For Pound List after his unexpected destruction of Antonio Margarito via 9th round TKO. Mosley looked better than ever using superior accuracy and hand speed. In the past 2 years, Mosley has lost a close unanimous decision to Miguel Cotto, knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in the 12th round, and knocked out Antonio Margarito in the 9th round. With the win, Mosley won the WBA welterweight title. Mosley has said he wants a rematch with Cotto in the future.

4. Bernard "Executioner" Hopkins (49-5 with 32 KO's): Hopkins seems to never get old. He is 44 and the old ambassador in a young man's sport. Hopkins recently shocked the boxing world as he easily beat the former undefeated and undisputed World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik at a catchweight of 170 pounds. Hopkins imposed his will on Pavlik and seemed to land whenever he wanted to. Like many boxing analysts have said, Hopkins seemed to "turn back the clock" as he schooled the 26 year old Pavlik. In the past few years, Hopkins has wins over Antonio Tarver and Winky Wright and a split decision loss to Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins has said on ESPN, that he wants to move up to cruiserweight to fight Tomasz Adamek.

5. Israel "Magnifico" Vazquez (43-4 with 31 KO's): Vazquez moved up to #5 on the List after he impressively won two of the three fights against Rafael Marquez and is hailed as one of the best trilogies in boxing history. Vazquez has not fought since he won a split decision over Marquez in March 2008 and has been inactive for over a year now due to eye problems. He does not have a future opponent scheduled and could be removed from the Pound for Pound list in the future due to inactivity.

6. Paul "Punisher" Williams (36-1 with 27 KO's): Williams is not well known but is the best light middleweight fighter in boxing. He has a decision win against Antonio Margarito in 2007. He has also beat Sharmba Mitchell and Verno Phillips. Williams avenged the only loss on his resume with a first round KO in the rematch. Very good power and hand speed. Williams has a match coming up against Winky Wright on April 11th on HBO.

7. Miguel Angel Cotto (33-1 with 27 KO's): Cotto returned a few weeks back knocking out Michael Jennings winning the WBO welterweight belt and looking like the Cotto of old. Also working for Cotto, is the controversial loss he suffered against Margarito. Everyone is speculating that Margarito must of used the illegal hand wraps against Cotto as well. Before his only loss, Cotto has big wins against Mosley, Judah, Malinaggi, Quintana, and Urkal. Cotto's next fight is scheduled for June, again in Madison Square Garden. No opponent has been named yet but it could be a rematch with Mosley.

8. Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan (32-1-1 with 26 KO's): Darchinyan is the undisputed super flyweight champion right now. He does talk a lot of trash before fights but unlike most, he can also walk the walk. His only loss was by knockout but that was because of overconfidence and thinking he was unbeatable. In his last 3 fights, he impressively knocked out Kirilov in the fifth, became undisputed champion by spectacularly knocking out Mijares in the ninth, and just last month, stopped Jorge Arce in the eleventh round. Vic has said he wants to move up in weight and try unifying the belts in the bantamweight division.

9. Kelly "Ghost" Pavlik (35-1 with 31 KO's): Like Cotto, Pavlik also returned recently and retained his undisputed middleweight belts by beating Marco Antonio Rubio. Pavlik rose to stardom when he knocked out the heavily favorite and undefeated Jermain Taylor. Pavlik proved the first fight wasn't a fluke as he defeated Taylor in the rematch as well. Palik has also beaten Edison Miranda and Gary Lockett recently. There are talks about making a superfight between Pavlik and Arthur Abraham, who is the second best middleweight in the world, even though nothing is official yet.

10. "Bad" Chad Dawson (27-0 with 17 KO's): Dawson is not known by many in the boxing world but he is undefeated and is one of the best light heavyweights and does have quality wins against Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson, Tomasz Adamek, and Eric Harding. Dawson will get more experienced, and more popularity. If he continues to dominate like he has in the past, he will definately move up on the P4P list. He is next sheduled to have a rematch with Antonio Tarver on May 9 but expect the result to be the same as the first fight.

Honorable Mention: Arthur Abraham, Juan Manuel Lopez, Rafael Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Wladimir Klitschko, Ivan Calderon

Some of the big name fighters who fell from the P4P Top 10 List in the last few months was Joe Calzaghe (due to his retirement) and Antonio Margarito (due to big loss to Mosley and allegations about hand wraps).

Good job with your list, yes ours are pretty similar. I think Pavlik and Cotto both have a lot to prove after their losses. If you include Vazquez, Marquez has to be there as well.

I think the top ten list is pretty acurate, I caould make a case for all of them. There are always others that you could put in there, but I think your choises are sound. As for Wlad, I think Vitali is the better fighter, if he could just stay healthy

I think referring to an over the hill, way undernourished Delahoya as "one of boxings best" is a tad generous. he certainly isn't what he was and hasn't been for a while now.
