My Candy

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
There was a time that I was in love with you
a long time ago.
You had the best smile and the sexiest voice
I used to say that you had a voice like candy
It was young and fresh and deep and sweet.
If it had a flavor, it would have been, well, like chocolate.
But then we went for a while without seeing each other
and when we did, you had changed.
You didn't act the way you used to
You didn't behave like the man I knew.
Even your voice was different
You acted rough and you looked and sounded it too
But something would always draw us back together
we always found a way to keep in touch
I stopped loving you, though.
You became just a friend
maybe just a means to an end
Lately, we have been spending more time together
And I have started remembering bits and pieces of the way things used to be
Last night when we were together, the pale light from the television created shadows in the darkness.
And I was able to see you like I hadn't seen you in a long time.
And then you said my name; the faintest hint of candy was on your tongue
and I looked up at you and saw you smiling down at me
and all at once I remembered why I loved you.
