My Canine Legislator

Lorraine Yapps Cohen

She leads a life of lux,
She sleeps most of the day.
When making a mess,
Does she clean up? No way!

My girl, the canine,
Is quite the mademoiselle.
I make my home her own,
And for free, as well.

Dinner is served daily
Not with wine, but a whine.
At my expense she is served,
As such, she's just fine.

For this she pays nothing,
While I earn a living.
She thinks nothing of taking
As I do the giving.

A collar of pearls
Identifies who she is:
A statement of status
Saying clearly what is.

It was then that I knew:
I shall tell, not grouse,
My dog is like a member of Congress,
A lifelong rep in the House!
