My Cat is Ruining My Area Rugs! What Are the Solutions to This Problem?

Lance Esondi
Many cat owners have learned to put up with some typical behaviors that you would expect out of these pets. One thing that can't be put up with is the way your average cat will treat your area rugs at home. These rugs can't be ruined consistently because they are expensive to replace, so the cat needs to be dealt with to protect the rug while keeping your pet.

One of the most common problems is that your cat will start using your rug as their own personal litter box. The smell will absorb into the rug and cause quite a problem of bad odor in that room. It's not known why this happens, but it's very common. You need to do a few things about this.

Get some odor deterrent sprays that you use on the rug. This makes the cat not want to go there. These sprays are fairly cheap and help with the urination problems.

Get the odors out of the rug. If the cat can't smell their own urine, it's less likely to repeat the accidents.

Make sure your cat's litter box is clean. Sometimes when the litter box is not up to their personal tastes, they find other parts of your home to use.

A second common problem is scratching up the rug. Cats like the complex texture of the area rugs and will use them.

To deter this type of behavior, you have to provide other textures in your home for your cat to use that will be more appealing than the rug on the floor. There are scratching posts and pads with complex textures that many cats love. If they need to scratch, they will go to these as opposed to your expensive area rug.
