My Computer, My Companion, My Friend

Annie Jean Brewer
Today he is seated upon the washing machine, playing music while I work and fold the laundry.

Last night he tucked me into bed with a good book and great dreams.

Always he is there for me.

Never in my wildest imaginings could I have dreamed this mesh between man and machine that is my life. Never could I have conceived of days without a book, a person or a piece of paper to help me along, but it has happened just the same.

My laptop is my constant companion; he rides within a special backpack awaiting my every need. He waits within the car like a silent sentinel for those moments when I call.

He is the first I reach for every morning, and the last to kiss me goodnight. He is the only one to really know me, to see me without makeup, in the bathtub, alone. His lilting tunes lull me into a relaxing daze while keeping me connected to my internet companions.

He is my phone, using invisible cords to carry golden tones of cheer from those I love, to those I adore.

My window to the world; he carries the magical ability of teaching me anything I want to learn--I just have to ask and it is there.

His batteries carry me through even when the power is out; always there, always available to record my hopes, my fears, my dreams.

He is the only soul to know that which I truly am inside; he sees who I read, to what I listen, where I go and how I dream. He is always there, silently comforting--even when I'm being bad.

Truly, he is my one real friend.

He is the only one to make me feel safe sharing my hopes and dreams. He accepts what I type, accepts my desire, accepts who I am on the INSIDE.

He is a part of me.

No, but he kept me company--which is more than what most men bother to do on Valentine's!
