My Down Home Wedding

Imogen Rayne AAB BSCOM
Today, makes my fourth wedding anniversary and I can't help but think about the day I finally decided to say I do. It was an ordinary day in Jacksonville, FL., but it was a day that would change my life in many ways. We have had ups and downs since then like every couple, but we have two rules that we always honor. We never let the sun go down on our anger and we call a truce when we cannot reach a conclusion we both agree on.

November 30th 2006 was my official wedding day, but it was a day that I will truly never forget. I began the day excited about our wedding plans and I worked hard to make sure everything was perfect. I didn't want a big wedding, so I invited only my and his family to the wedding. Suddenly, I got a call that our Pastor was unable to marry us, due to being put in the hospital. I almost gave up on getting married that day, but my landlord was a notary and she performed the ceremony right in her office.

My husband and I were married, yet my sister-in-law decided to throw us an official wedding with the frills and all. I explained that I was already officially married and it did no good, because she was not taking no for an answer. We decided to get dressed in Jean and nice t-shirts, since I don't really care for dresses. I decided to make one demand, which was to have the ceremony in my granddad's front yard and I wanted him to give me away.

My husband and I showed up at my granddad's house and I about cried, because my sister-in-law had literally went all out in setting up the front yard. They made a path for us to walk down and they had managed to get a heart-shaped wedding arch. The trees and porch was decorated with light purple and white wedding sheers that was tied into bows. Then, my sister-in-law decides that I needed to be dressed up even more than I was, so we robbed my mom's closet and she made a wedding veil using a barrette.

The sun began to set and we began hurrying to get everything in place, so we can begin the ceremony. Suddenly, I hear Rascal Flatts singing "God Blessed the Broken Road" on the CD player and I turned back to see my sister-in-law smiling. My husband and my twin brother were waiting by the wedding arch and my granddad and my little niece walked my down the path they had so loving made. My husband and I recited the vows we had written and then moved on to smash cake in each other's face.

My down home wedding wasn't traditional, but I must say it was one unforgettable yet perfect day. I never thought or dreamed that it would happen this way, but I must admit I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. However, without my sister-in-laws special touches, I wouldn't have had an experience that I will cherish for life. Tonight, as we celebrate our anniversary, I will say a special thank you to my sister-in-law.
