Cloth Shopping Bags
I have used my own cloth bags for years. Not only can they be reused, but you can launder them when they become soiled. They come in very handy for grocery shopping. How many of you have had those cheap plastic (yuck) bags break? When you use a cloth bag, you won't have to worry about that. I take at least two cloth bags with me where ever I go. You never know when you are going to see something you want to buy. Whether it's a pair of jeans or a few oranges, these cloth shopping bags are just the ticket. I refuse to use plastic!
Recycling
Recycling has become a big part of this household. What with most cities doing their part for recycling pick up, there should not be anyone that is not recycling now. Everything from cardboard, newspaper, glass and cans to plastic milk jugs. All of this can be recycled.
Composting
Very little is actually thrown away in this house. I have begun a compost heap. It isn't very complicated. I just started with a small pile of dried leaves from last year and put the pile in a small corner of my back yard. It doesn't take up very much room and it is not unsightly. You don't need any fancy containers either. To that pile, I have been adding coffee grounds, egg shells and fruit and vegetable peelings. Stir the pile occasionally and by the time you are ready for your spring planting, you will be all set. Just mix in with your soil before you begin planting and there you have it. No chemical additives are added to your soil. Just an all natural combination.
Public Transportation
Our household has chosen to give our vehicle ownership a rest and to utilize public transportation. What better way to help get rid of the carbon that is killing this planet? There are way too many vehicles on our highways and until more of them become green, I will ride the bus. Not only is this a way to ease the congestion on our roads, think about how much money you can save on gas and car insurance. Bus service is a real convenience. For $1.00 I can go any where in town that I want to go, do my shopping (with my cloth bags) and return home for another dollar. Besides saving money, with someone else doing the driving, you can catch up on your reading or do like I do and crochet. I get a lot done this way.
There are several things that I haven't mentioned. The list is astounding, but we have to start somewhere. Any little thing that we can do will save this beautiful earth.
This wonderful planet has many names, mother earth, the blue planet whatever we choose to call it, it is our home. Our way of life is destroying it. The things that have become a convenience for us are poisoning this earth. Please help make every day an Earth Day. Add your own footprints in a positive way.
