My Experience with My Newborn

Betty Treptow
When I went into labor with my second child we were in the process of moving. I had a lot of energy that day and I had worked very hard trying to get the house ready before the baby was born. Unfortunately no such luck because I went into labor about half way through the move.

My contractions came quickly so my husband rushed me to the hospital about 25 miles away. When I arrived they told me I was in false labor and they wanted to send me home. I refused to leave the hospital because this being my second child I knew I was going to have the baby.

My baby was born two hours later. If I had left the hospital I would not have made it back in time. She came very quickly and then I was drugged and managed to sleep through the night and most of the next day. My husband said that they had stopped by the nursery to let me see the baby and told me what sex the baby was before taking me to my room. I don't remember that happening or much of anything else for the next day and a half.

My baby was born about 1:00 a.m. I managed to sleep the rest of the night and most of the next day. They brought my baby to me the next evening and told me it was time to feed my baby. They had the baby wrapped in blue blankets and a blue hat. I had really wished for a girl but I was happy that my baby was healthy.

The second day when I was getting ready to go home the nurse brought my baby to me to dress. Still my baby was wrapped in blue blankets. The nurse was telling me how good my little girl was in the nursery. I asked her if she was mistaken and that my baby was a boy.

She then told me that my baby was a girl. I had to then look for myself to see if she was telling me the truth. I had a baby girl and for two days I thought my baby was a boy. I had not yet named my baby thank goodness because back then you did the paperwork when you were discharged.

My husband had not visited me because he had our two year old son to take care of by himself. He also had to finish moving and getting the baby's things together. We also had not gotten a phone in yet so I didn't receive any phone calls from him. You can imagine my shock when I found out that I was tricked by a blue blanket.
