My Experience Overcoming Infant Acid Reflux

Mary Lamphere
My daughter suffered from such severe infant acid reflux that we thought we may have to take her in for surgery. While no parent wants their baby to have to be operated on, we almost thought that this was going to be better than having our daughter suffer any more. She was miserable and it was making myself and my husband absolutely miserable too! Luckily, with time and lots of persistence our daughter was able to overcome infant acid reflux-in fact she now eats nearly anything, any time of day, all day long!

Treatments that We Tried and What Worked Best for Infant Acid Reflux:

It seemed like we had tried everything under the sun when it came to our baby's acid reflux. At home remedies would sometimes help a little bit but nothing seemed to last. For weeks our daughter slept in her car seat to keep her sitting upright and for nearly a year I didn't wear anything that I actually liked. No matter what we would put on it was going to get ruined by spit up and it just seemed better not to wear anything important.

We tried Mylicon drops to the point that I was worried that I was going to be giving them to her too much and still this didn't really help anyway. My husband was constantly trying to come up with a reason as to why our daughter spit up all the time and yet the only answer was something that we couldn't seem to fix.

We tried swings that were upright, upright seats, upright positioners for the crib and nothing seemed to work for her. She was placed on a medication called Ranitidine which is also known as Zantac and proven to be some pretty effective stuff. However, this only reduced the acid reflux in our poor baby to the point that she didn't lose everything she ate with every meal. She was still so uncomfortable and it made the entire family upset that there was so little that we could do-she had to eat but eating made it worse.

After about 9 months of dealing with the ups and downs of acid reflux, our baby finally started to accept solid foods and they started to stay in her belly. She was just the happiest little thing in the world once she could eat and it didn't seem to come up immediately afterward. We thought that we were going to have to bring her in for surgery but at the very last moment things started to change and her acid reflux finally began to subside!
