My Experience with the Side Effects of Prevacid

Prevacid A.k.a. Lansoprazole

Andrea Coventry
Prevacid, generic name Lansoprazole, is typically prescribed to those who are suffering from acid reflux or persistent heartburn. It is a drug that I have used a few times over the past decade, and the one that I have found the most beneficial when dealing with acid reflux issues.

It was first prescribed to me about eleven years ago, when I was in a pre-ulcerous condition. I was constantly feeling nauseous and frequently vomited after eating highly acidic foods, such as tomato sauce. My doctor prescribed it for me and had me take it over a three-month period. I was fortunate enough to have no side effects when taking the medication. But I had to make sure that I followed other directions given to me by my doctor. I had to make sure that I cut out any acidic foods or drinks: coffee, orange juice, soda, tomato-based products. I also had to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Otherwise, it was almost pointless to be on the medication.

I also tried taking Nexium and Prilosec over the years, but found Prevacid to be the most beneficial any time that I needed it. I've taken it on three separate occasions over a period of eleven years, the last being about five or six years ago.

Some people, however, due experience side effects when taking Prevacid. If you go to the WebMd site, you will find a comprehensive list of potential side effects.

It is possible that constipation or diarrhea may occur when taking this medication. If these symptoms persist or get worse, of course you should contact your physician.

Other rare, yet less serious, side effects include some dizziness or head pain.

A highly unlikely, yet serious side effect would be stomach pain or feeling like you need to vomit. This would be pain differing from the reason you went in to see the doctor in the first place.

If taken for a long time, as in over three years, a vitamin B-12 deficiency could occur. Symptoms of this include unusual weakness, sore tongue, numbness, tingling of hands or feet.

In the event of an allergic reaction, contact your physician immediately. These signs include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, and trouble breathing.

As always, discuss all medications you are taking with your doctor, and do not hesitate to contact him or her with any questions you may have.
