My Experience Taking Adipex-P

Jamie Burke
I have always fought my weight. It is just a never ending battle for me. Several years ago, I tried to take Adipex-P to boost my weight loss. Here is what happened to me.

Who will prescribe it?

When a group of my friends decided they wanted to lose weight, I joined the club! I'm always looking for the easy way or a support group to do it with. One of the girls had heard about a doctor that did Adipex-P clinics on Saturdays. For a fee, we listened to a person explain how we needed to take the pills, we lined up to get weighed and have a brief examination, then got our prescriptions. Off we went to get it filled at the local pharmacy and we were set to start our diets!

Now, I can't tell you the doctor's name or if he was really a doctor. Looking back, the way it was all done, I feel like maybe we were doing something illegal. This guy was making a fortune off of us wanting to lose weight, but he wasn't offering any real help. Just a quick fix. The magic pill.

I'm hoping now that he's not "practicing" anymore. I couldn't tell you, because I haven't been in a long time.

What other names can it be called?

Adipex-P isn't the only brand name it goes by. Also look for Lonamin. The generic name is phentermine hydrochloride.

What exactly does it do?

Adipex-P is an appetite suppressant. It does the job, too. I lost the weight and didn't want to eat. The pounds just melted away. But I also did a lot of exercising and walking during this time.

How long can it be taken?

This is what I didn't know until now. It is a short term pill. It is only recommended for a few weeks. After that, it loses it's effectiveness. I knew it wasn't working as well as it first did, but the doctor kept prescribing it for me, so I kept taking it. I was on it for about a year. Way too long.

Who should use it?

Only people that are really over weight should take it. At the time I took it, I was not that large. It probably never should have been given to me or my friends. Non of us were obese then. It is recommended for people who actually have weight related problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. When I took the pill, I didn't have any of those problems, now I do.

Are there side effects?

Heck, yes, there are bad ones! At first, all they did was really make me hyper. That's probably why I worked out like I did. I did get dry mouth all of the time, so I kept water with me. Later, after several months on the pill, I started having more serious side effects. I would get very dizzy, even if I was lying down or sitting still. Headaches became routine for me as well. Then my eyes started bouncing around inside my head. That's when I knew I couldn't take it anymore.

There are other side effects, but those are the ones that affected me.

Can I take it with other medications?

It depends on what you take. I am on Zoloft, so no, I couldn't take it. It has a bad reaction with anti-depressants. It is also not gonna mix with thyroid meds or high blood pressure meds.

Is Adipex-P worth taking?

In my opinion, no. Yes, it will help you lose the weight, but if you do it like I did and not go through your regular doctor, then you are asking for trouble. I'm lucky because at the time I took it, I was young, healthy and not on any regular medication except for birth control pills. Now, I'm older, on high cholesterol medication and Zoloft. I do qualify more now because I am so over weight, but knowing how it made me feel, I just wouldn't try it again.
