My Experience Taking Iron Pills: Ferrous Sulfate Review

Angela Tague
After months of battling fatigue, my doctor tested by ferritin levels, and discovered that my iron levels were barely on the charts. With a level of 7, he asked me to start taking 325mg of ferrous sulfate, or iron pills, each day. After one and half weeks of taking an iron supplement, I have many good results to report.

Energy
Before starting the daily dosage of iron, I was fatigued daily. By late afternoon, I wanted to take a nap. More than once my eyes felt heavy, and I'd find myself dozing at my desk. Since I usually have a high level of energy, this symptom was very unusual for me. Although I would be tired at the end of a 12 hour work day, I could still manage to make dinner or do a load of laundry. But, at the peak of my iron deficiency, I found it difficult to work more than six hours before falling asleep for a nap of at least two hours.

Clarity
Before taking the iron pills, I found myself slurring my words and having difficulty recalling simple facts from earlier in the week. Since I am very detail oriented, I knew something was wrong, but wasn't sure what. I took more naps, and tried to make healthier food choices, but nothing was restoring my ability to recall small details from just a few days ago. After a short time on the pills, my clarity has been restored, and my speech improved.

Body Temperature
I always feel cold. When I entered my doctor's office, I was wearing a long sleeved sweater. It was 75 degrees outside, and I didn't think anything of what I was wearing. I am used to packing a sweater to take with me wherever I go, and wearing long pants during the summer if I will be going places with air conditioning. At any given time my hands and feet felt like ice, but I always just thought that was just me.

A week and a half into taking iron pills, my hands and feet are warm. I was comfortable wearing capri pants on a 65 degree day, and I am not reaching for a sweater by afternoon. My body temperature is more regulated, and I am overall more comfortable.

Side Effects
I haven't noticed any negative side effects since taking the iron pills. My doctor warned of constipation and possible stomach upset.
