My Family Christmas Movie Tradition: 'A Smokey Mountain Christmas'

Chad Daw
Christmas movies are not only a traditional in my family, beginning at the beginning of December, but one certain movie is watched repeatedly. A "Smokey Mountain Christmas" is a Christmas classic that my entire family has watched for over 10 years. This movie is played when we decorate the Christmas tree, when we cook Christmas dinner, and when we eat Christmas dinner with the entire family.

My Reason for Loving "A Smoky Mountain Christmas"

The reason that this movie has made it into our hearts, and souls, is because we have all had experience with orphans, especially those that have the heart to persevere no matter what the circumstances. My good friend grew up as an orphan because his parents were killed in a car accident when he was 5. I met him after he had been in and out of state run houses and had finally gotten placed with a great foster family.

Obviously, his luck did not run very good because when he was 15 his foster father was killed in an industrial accident, and his foster mother withdrew into herself. Instead of allowing himself to be placed back into foster care, he began taking care of his foster mother, as well as himself and his foster sister, who was 10. Instead of giving up and allowing his new family to fall apart, he stepped up, gave up his childhood, and took care of his family until his foster mother received professional help and got better.

My Wife's Reason for Loving "A Smokey Mountain Christmas"

My wife has similar stories, which are much closer to home for her. As a young girl, she bounced from youth home to youth home. Even though she was not an orphan, she still did not have what you would call a family. Even though she was constantly held back, and told that she would never be a good person, she held onto her morals and will and strove forward to become the great person that she is today.

"A Smokey Mountain Christmas"Touches all of our Lives

This is why "A Smokey Mountain Christmas" is so important to our family. The orphans in the movie fight through everything and end up with a great family to share the holidays with. I am happy to say that my children have never had to face this issue, and hopefully never while. Unlike most people in the world, we have a backup plan in case something happens to us. If we happen to pass away, for any reason, two separate sets of grandparents will take them so that they will not be in the system. Even though the state system is a good resort for children that have no other options, for children that have an option, they are best to not be placed into state care.
