My Fascination with Supernatural: Season 2 is Here

France Aprahamian
I am eagerly awaiting the return of my favorite show, Supernatural, on October 4. I have never been so involved in a television program in all of my life. I have to admit: The eagerness stems from interaction with other fans. That is also something I have never done before even in the days of Star Trek, and I am a Trekkie, I confess. The thing is all if us. fangirls and guys, truly do want to know what happens next. It's not just the hot ghost-hunting guys that ride around all day in a 1967, or some say, 1965 Chevy Impala.

The start of season two was sad for all of us. Our beloved John Winchester, Papa, to us fans, passed away in the first episode. He did so with finesse and I say that tongue in cheek because he died to save his son, Dean, who was on his death bed. Okay, Dean wasn't on the death bed because he was walking around as a ghost of himself chasing reapers. But I digress. Dean was effectively dead but his father's sacrifice brought him back to life. It was a bittersweet beginning to an awesome season. I have to say I loved twenty one out of twenty two episodes so I will hit the highlights for those who do not, shame on you, watch the show.

Around episode five, it was called Simon Said, we met another gifted young men like Sam, who has visions. The young man's name was Andy and he was able to make people do things by using his mind. He was a simple person who only used his gift for life's every day needs. Well, unknown to sweet Andy he had a twin brother who had the same gift, but he had moved to Andy's town and begun to use his gift for murder. Andy had no idea until the Winchester's came to town. This episode showed us how the gifts can be used for good or evil. I believe in the upcoming season Sam will have to make that choice.

Another of my favorites was called Houses of the Holy it explored the spiritual life of Sam and Dean. In this episode we find out that Sam prays every day, which is interesting because in real life Jensen Ackles who plays Dean says he prays every night. The thing is the character of Dean does not have any spiritual inclinations and the very last line in this episode was haunting. "I believe what happened was God's will." That line was said by Dean, who I would think had to have felt some kind of change of heart. Of course on the show, he continued to express a lack of spiritual affliation.

The last of my favorites was called What is and What should Never Be. This was an episode based on the legend of a djinn, or genie. It was nice because we got kind of a look into what life could have been like if the Winchesters had a normal life. Unfortunately for them the djinn does not give you an alternate life it only makes you believe that you are living in a different world all the while it feeds on you til you are dead. Okay that was creepy.. But the world that Dean wanted so badly involved his mother still being alive. I thought it was sweet, we all knew Dean was a mama's boy. In the alternate world Dean was as happy about mowing the yard as eating a home made sandwich from mom. It made me see that the simple things in life should be enjoyed. I admit I may have thought about it a bit too much.

At the end of last season we were left with many burning questions despite the fact that the nemesis, the yellow eyed demon, who had dogged Sam and Dean's every step since the start of the Series two years ago, died. Not only did the finale allow "the boys" that is what we call them, to kill the demon but other questions arose.

For starters in the finale we find out that Sam and Dean's mother, Mary, knew the demon. You may say well how do we know that? Isn't Mary dead? Thanks to the wonders of demon powers the demon, before his demise, showed Sam in a vision that Mary addressed the demon, as though she knew him, on the night she died. I was floored, though admittedly in my fan fictions I had intimated that Mary knew something about the things that he boys were dealing with. Of course in my fan fictions I was only trying to unravel the mystery in a logical way.

Not only did Mary address the demon but that rascally demon put some of his own blood into our beloved Sam. Another shocker for all of us glued to our television sets on the night that they showed part one of a two part season finale. If that wasn't enough to make us sigh in wonder at Eric Kripke's creative powers, they ended that first part with the death of Sam. I think my heart about stopped that night. I kept thinking with tears in my eyes that no Sam is not Dead. It was an amazing first part.

Well since I gave the highlights of the first part of the finale I have to share the most disturbing bit of the second part. To bring our Sam back to life Dean, Sam's protective older brother, exchanged his soul for Sam to live. I have to say as much as Dean loves Sam I was a bit unhappy with the deal. Now that is a personal thing. The worse part of it was that the deal Dean made with the demon allowed him only one year to live. Now let me clarify that this demon was the deal making kind not the havoc wrecking yellow eyed kind. I have to admit I wanted to reach through the television and shake Mr. Dean Winchester but after watching two seasons of the show I do not think he could have done anything less. Sacrifice is Dean's middle name.

Now one of the other things that happened in the finale is that after Sam came back to life and Dean began to think about the deal he made there was no time for sitting around. Before the yellow eyed demon died the gates of hell were opened and out swarmed hundreds of lesser demons, I assume, to do some damage on mankind. Yes, the boys have a lot of work to do to get those pesky critters back where they belong all the while Sam tries to find a way to get Dean out of his deal. With one year to live our smart talking, skirt chasing, demon hunting favorite eldest son has to make some hard choices.

Well. so our much awaited season three will be quite busy with rounding up the demons and according to spoilers dealing with old friends and new enemies for the Winchesters. The more I wrote about the show the more I can't wait. Yes, I think I am completely hooked.

Completely hooked, yes I am. It's great to see others acknowledge that Dean could have done no less than make the deal for Sam or it wouldn't have been Dean. I LOVE the deal.
