My Fashion Disaster While on a Date

How About Those Shoes?

Ruth Carter
When my husband and I first started dating, I always wanted to look my best for him. I would spend hours picking out what clothes that I would wear, deciding how I would style my hair, selecting just the right shade of lip gloss, and choosing just the right pair of shoes to accent my outfit. I wanted to make sure that when I met him at the door to pick me up for our dates, he would be proud to be out with me in public.

One particular evening, I was running late after getting off of work and was hurrying to get myself together for my and Michael's date. I put on a lovely navy skirt with a paisley design and a purple shirt that strategically matched with one of the many colors in the skirt. I was trying to think of what color shoes would look best with my outfit when the doorbell rang, and I realized that it was time for Michael to come and get me. I grabbed a pair of navy shoes (or so I thought), threw them onto my feet, and headed to the door.

Upon getting into the truck with Michael, he and I decided to go and get something to eat and then head to the movie theater. We grabbed a bite to eat at Wendy's and then went to the theater to see the movie "A Few Good Men."

Everything was going as usual. We purchased some popcorn and drinks, sat down, and began to watch the movie. As we were sitting in the viewing room, I happened to put my feet up on the back of the seat in front of me (only a few other people were in the theater with us, and they were several rows away from us), and I noticed that one of the shoes appeared to be shaped differently from the other. I did a double take and then just brushed it off as my eyes playing tricks on me in a dark room.

After the movie was over, Michael and I were going out into the foyer of the theater, and I had to make a stop at the restroom. When I entered the bathroom, I happened to look down at my shoes, and it was then that I realized I was wearing one navy shoe and one purple shoe. The difference in the shape of the shoes that I had noticed while in the movie viewing room was due to the fact that I was wearing two totally different shoes. I could not believe that I had left my house with two mismatched shoes. I was mortified.

I came out of the restroom and told Michael to look at my shoes. He looked down and smiled. He and I both had a good laugh about it, and after that, we went and had ice cream.

Since that night, I have always been sure to check and make sure that my shoes not only match my outfit but each other as well. Even after seventeen years of marriage, this event still makes me laugh.
