My Favorite Christmas Song Ever

Silent Night

Laura Brady
Even before Thanksgiving arrives we start playing Christmas songs in our home. We love how just the sound of these songs immediately fills the house and our hearts with the spirit of Christmas and the joy of family, home and most of all God. My favorite Christmas song of all time is Silent Night. It not only reflects the true meaning and joy of Christmas but its sweet and tender lyrics fill me with a quiet peace that can be difficult to find at times.

When I was about six or seven my parents had just bought our first house and were struggling financially, although I didn't realize it at the time. It's only looking back that I see how tight things were, but my parents never made us feel worried or deprived. Every year on Christmas Eve we would sit in our living room and watch the Yule log on TV and listen to Christmas songs, bathed in the light from our Christmas tree and the burning Yule log. It may sound corny these days but back then it was a way for people to get the ambience and visual warmth of a toasty fire when you couldn't have a real one. Silent Night was my favorite Christmas song and along with the coziness of the fire and the excitement of Christmas Eve it was the perfect combination for me.

Later, after I learned to play the piano I would practice by playing Christmas songs from a songbook my Mother had given to me. It had lots of illustrations with each Christmas carol and as I played I played out the stories in my head as I sang the songs. The Silent Night picture was my favorite also because everyone was looking so tenderly at the baby Jesus, and the light shining from him and the sky epitomized the feeling the song gave to me. I was puzzled by the phrase "Round yon virgin, Mother and child" but I eventually put it together.

There are lots of Christmas songs that I love, but Silent Night is and always will be my favorite because of my memories and the feeling I get when I hear it or sing it. That feeling of peace, joy and love for God is what Christmas is all about for me but it's nice to have music to express it or put me in that place. I hope that everyone has a Christmas song that can do that for them.
