My Favorite Forbidden Fruit

Lucky M Diaz
Marvelous mangoes shined and stacked in a row.

Light green, dark green, some with a red glow.

Sensual fruit fantasies stop me in the aisle,

I reach for a red mango, and a green one falls to the tile.

As I bend down to get the one that got away,

Four more marvelous mangoes fall to my dismay.

A fellow shopper, behind me, laughs and tries to lend a hand,

But he trips over my foot and knocks over the entire stand.

As destiny would have it, the shopper is no stranger to me,

I know the kind man as my personal physician, Dr. McGhee.

I feel my face blush as he recognizes exactly who I am,

Then he whispers," You're allergic to mangoes and don't really give a damn?"

I am well enough aware of my own oral allergy,

But his rhetorical question is a reminder to let the marvelous mangoes be.
