My Favorite Grey's Anatomy Character: Dr. Bailey

Everybody seems to be glued to their TV sets every Thursday evenings. The reason? ABC' s very famous show "Grey's Anatomy". The network has hit a gold mine with the success of this show. Their plot thickens every episode, mostly because they have the ingredients stories need that would intrigue and interest its viewers. The creators and writers are very talented people who come up with a brilliant combination of characters that serve as doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital.

There is Dr. Meredith Grey who is a virtual sucker for love and romance, but is one of the hospital's best interns. Brilliant, but sometimes cold, Dr. Christina Yang is perhaps the most driven of the young interns. Dr. George O'Malley stands out as intelligent yet caring. Dr. Izzy Stevens is the statuesque beauty who admits that she is both a surgeon but a person who always feels. Dr. Alex Karev would hit you as a playboy and jerk, but underneath is actually a gentle and concerned person.

The attendings are Dr. Shepherd, Dr. Burke, Dr. Sloan, Dr. Montgomery. They are a set of interesting, highly intelligent surgeons. They all have their eyes set on the position of being the chief of surgery. That is, if and when, the present chief Dr. Webber-- the suave, highly capable doctor-- would soon vacate his post.

Dr. Callie Torre-O'Malley , a resident, is an orthopedic surgeon. She is witty and funny, and always speaks her mind out.

Which leads us to another resident doctor, Dr. Miranda Bailey, a surgeon. She is in charge of the surgical interns. She has earned the nickname "The Nazi" because of her no non-sense style and very tough personality. She leads them well, and gives them ample training ground. She does not play favorites, does not tolerate tardiness and unnecessary chit-chats, and is ready o reprimand whenever she feels that one deserves it.

Despite being perceived as a terror lurking behind the interns' back, Dr. Bailey actually feels for each of them. When they go wrong, she would recollect and, at one point, blamed herself for being " too soft". Although she does not state it, it seems that for her, her interns are actually like her own children. When they make mistakes, she would question herself.

She has been a good model for the interns, and she is doing a brilliant job in teaching them. Actually mothering them, to a certain extent. Not only does she guide them in being professionals, but in learning to be solid, mature individuals.

What also makes Dr. Bailey stand out is her ability to transform herself into a very compassionate and concerned doctor to her patients. She tries to communicate well and tries to listens to her patients. She has the special ability to reach out with kindness and shows a great deal of desire to always be of help to others.

In one of the episodes, a male doctor hinted that Dr. Bailey was being too kind to her patient. Dr. Bailey felt a little truth to this, but eventually realized that in her kind of work, she does need a loving, gentle relation to her patients. And she is actually being true to herself.

Dr. Bailey came up with the idea of a free clinic next to Seattle Grace Hospital. She spearheaded this cause, and went through the troubles of acquiring signatures from attending physicians who would support her project. Her reason for establishing the free clinic is for less fortunate individuals to be treated without charge, and so that prevention for serious illnesses can also be done. Dr. Bailey has a very generous heart to have thought of this charitable act.

I love this character so much. But I actually wish that there would be more Dr. Baileys in real life. Doctors who teach and train other doctors well, and put the younger doctors under their wings. They serve as mentors, inspirations and guiding forces. To their patients, they do not just treat their illnesses, but heal the emotional scars that come with their physical conditions. They do not just aim to be rich and to be in powerful positions. They are true to their oath to be selfless in serving those who need their medical services.
