My Favorite Novel She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
She's Come Undone is Wally Lamb's First Novel and It's a Winner
When I first picked up She's Come Undone several years ago, I was hooked by the end of the first sentence. I so identified with Dolores Price. In particular, the years in which she grew up, her feeling of not existing sometimes and the naivety of the times struck familiar tones with me.
Devastated by her father's decision to move out and leave the family, Dolores was left to fend for herself with her mentally unstable mother. Dolores Price and her mother moved in with Dolores' maternal grandmother, who provided stability for them. Thus begins Dolores Price's adventures. There's laughter, tears, and considerable fear, angst and disappointments to follow in She's Come Undone.
About halfway through She's Come Undone, I realized I didn't know who wrote it. Upon checking the book's front, it said, "Wally Lamb." I thought, "Wally" is an unusual name for a woman. I checked further only to discover Wally Lamb was a man! The fact a male was able to develop and "know" from the inside out how this female character, Dolores Price would think, act and feel was simply mind-boggling.
Wally Lamb sends us an inspiring message: no matter what happens to you in life, you can recover. She's Come Undone was the first book in my life that I truly mourned when it was over. I wanted to know more about Dolores Price and what was going on in her life. I thought about her for months afterward. She's Come Undone was published in 1992. Oprah selected it for her Book Club in 1997.
Once you pick up She's Come Undone, you'll have a terrible time putting it down. In fact, when I loaned Undone to a friend on a Friday, she started reading it that night. She read She's Come Undone voraciously all weekend. Come Monday morning, she actually called in sick to work so she could stay home and finish the book!
Before it's all over, readers will cry for Dolores Price and develop great hope for her. If you want to meet a heroine to cheer for and become enveloped in a realistic story of one woman's struggles and triumphs, pick up She's Come Undone at your local second-hand bookstore or load it on to your reader device. You'll join the millions who love the fascinating story of Dolores Price.

Post a CommentI felt the same way when I read it years ago. I was hooked right from the beginning and read it straight though in a day or two. After your review, I think it's time for a re-read!
Pearl, It's also my favorite book too. I posted a review. During the research I gasped. I had read two of Wally Lamb's best sellers without realizing that he was my English teacher, at Norwich Free Academy. Of course, that was way before he had published any novels.
Do you want to know what the real kicker is. He's still there teaching English.
Thanks Pearl, I will look for it...!
Sounds like a good one, Pearl!
