My Favorite Photo - My Son's First Soccer Goal!

Theresa L.

My picture is about my oldest son, Michael. He is not an athletic child, but I wanted variety in his life. Unfortunately, it made it difficult to find a sport he was good at.

After trying different sports, we ended up in soccer. I think it helped Michael, my son, out a lot since his dad was his soccer coach. However, unlike his teammates, this was his first season playing.

To say Michael was the worse player on the team was an understatement, and being the worse player was very upsetting to him. Unfortunately, Michael comes from very competitive genes and worse he is not very good at failing.

Unfortunately, this is what left Michael feeling really bummed at the end of each game, and that season they never lost a game. However, every player but Michael scored at least one goal. Mike, my husband, was thrilled at having really great players, so you can see how that would add to my sons frustration.

We were very proud of him though, and by the end of the season he had greatly improved. However, he did not get that goal which made he not want to play anymore. He did go on to play again the following season, rather reluctantly, but it would be a season he would never forget.

I mention all of this because my favorite picture was taken during his second season of soccer. Not even two minutes before this picture was taken, Michael scored his first goal ever. That game he would score two goals, and the team would win.

The look on his face when he scored that goal is one I will never forget. He was so proud of himself.

He wanted something so much, and was at the point where he was about to quit because he believed he was not good enough. He did not quit and in the end he proved to himself that he could accomplish anything he put his mind to.

That is the reason I love this picture and continue to display it in my living room. It is not only a reminder to him to keep going forward no matter how bad it is, but also one, and I have many, proudest moments of his life. He continues to play soccer to this day.
