My Favorite Saint Patrick's Day Activity

Raising Money for Charity

Mathew Paul
Philanthropy is a desire to help mankind. In our era it means giving large donations to charitable institutions. We all have a natural desire to help mankind, to aid our fellow man. Just about everyone would like to be wildly successful and rich beyond our wildest dreams. Then we could be philanthropists and give large donations to our favorite charities. Sadly, most of us struggle just to survive and our charitable giving is limited.

That is why Saint Patrick's Day is so special for me. Every year at this time the supermarket where I work raises money for charity. This year we are supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). As a cashier I am required to ask every customer if they would like to make a donation. Those that make a 1 or 5 dollar donation can write their name on a Shamrock and we put the Shamrock on the wall for the pubic to see. The cumulative effect of asking every customer for a donation really adds up. Then we must add the giving in each store as the supermarket is part of a large chain.

One year we had a contest with prizes to see who could raise the most money. I competed with another cashier for first place and we were both in the neighborhood of 1,500 dollars. It became too difficult for the managers to count the Shamrocks, so we were both declared winners and we each got the prize. It gives me a great feeling every year to do my small part to help my fellow man.

MDA is a great organization with a great web site. Why not pay them a visit, as their address is listed below.
