My Favorite Short Story Writer O. Henry

Jay Queen
I love short stories. Being a short story writer myself, I take joy in reading the works of other short story writers. Through taking creative writing classes, I've come across many fantastic writers. Of all the stories that I've read, my favorite story was The Ransom of the Red Chief by O. Henry. This story is hilarious and if you have not read it, you should definitely check it out. Google it, it's out there! I don't want to talk about what it's about because I don't want to spoil it for you. That's how good it is. This story was so funny that I could not get through it in one read. Because of this story, O. Henry has become my favorite writer. His brilliance cannot be duplicated.

O. Henry is the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter. He was born on September 11th, 1962 and recently passed away on June 5th, 2010. He was born in North Carolina and later moved to Texas. After run ins with the law and a lot of traveling, O. Henry ended up in New York to be near his publishers. It was there he shined as the amazing writer that he is.

O. Henry is best known for his surprising endings. He wrote twisted endings which were playful and witty. Apart from my favorite story, The Ransom of the Red Chief, some of his other top stories are The Gift of the Magi, The Cop and the Anthem and A Retrieved Reformation.

One of the stories, The Gift of the Magi, is about a young couple who are madly and in love and want to buy each other christmas gifts. They don't have any money so the wife, without her husband's knowledge, sells her hair to buy her husband a platinum fob chain for his watch. Without his wife knowledge, the husband sells his watch to buy jeweled combs for his wife's hair.

If you are even the slightest bit interested in short stories, you need to check out O. Henry's work.

Great write-up. I love short stories for the same reason as you stated, although most of mine are in poetic form.
