My Favorite Summer Hobby: Nature Photography

Shannon L. Buck

There is something about photographing nature that I cannot get enough of. I love it. Photography is one of my favorite creative activities that I sometimes do on my own, but am willing to take others along for. I sometimes visit different sites with my sister or best friend, because we all enjoy this hobby.

I have a favorite camera that I use for this hobby. A digital Nikon. It was dropped about five years ago, causing the battery flap to break, and now has to be taped closed. The camera still works otherwise, and allows me to upload photographs onto my laptop for editing.

Generally speaking, I walk for this activity. The walk is calming, and I get some wonderful shots while walking to a location for a photo shoot. However, I do go long distances to photograph nature when the mood strikes. Locations with ample water, gardens or wooded areas are my favorites.

To prepare for a photo shoot, I be sure to have plenty of batteries with me. I put the camera and batteries into their carrying case, which has a shoulder strap, then I make a lunch so that I am able to sit and enjoy a meal where I am taking the photos. I plan to purchase a couple of memory cards for the camera at some point this summer, to allow me to take more photographs without having to break to upload pictures.

This summer, I will be spending much time photographing the natural areas where I am moving to. The photographs that are worthy will be placed on websites to be sold, providing me with a little extra income. I will be turning my hobby into a business opportunity, not to get rich off but to share the beauty of the natural world with others.

I will also experiment with creating slide shows from my summer photography activities, depicting specific areas around where I live and the places I visit. This will be a new way to express my creativity through photography. I make scrapbooks as well, journaling my experiences so that I might look back on them over the years and share the experiences with friends and family who visit my home.

Some of the photographs that I take may also be included with travel articles that I am planning to submit to online and offline publications. This will be another good way to earn a little money from my photography.
