My Favorite Thing to Do in Houston

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

Bobbi Leder
As a dog mom to an English cocker spaniel (who loves the woods), one of my favorite activities in Houston is taking my dog to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. The Arboretum, which spans over 155 acres, is a hidden gem nestled in Memorial Park (which according to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is one of the largest urban parks in the country) and has over five miles of walking trails. Each trail is named and there are signs along the way so you won't get lost. The Houston Arboretum has a variety of plants, birds and reptiles so you won't be bored while walking.

One of my favorite areas is the lily pond which you can view from the boardwalk. Each time I go to the pond, I spot different wildlife such as turtles or snakes. One of the nice features about the Arboretum is that there are benches throughout the park so you can sit, relax and take in the scenery.

Another added benefit of the Arboretum and one of the main reasons I go there is the tall trees which provide much needed shade in the Houston heat. It's perfect for dog walking. And of course my dog loves to sniff everything in the woods and look for squirrels to chase so it's always a fun adventure for him. Dogs are not allowed off-leash but if you use a flexi-lead they'll be able to enjoy the Houston Arboretum much more.

We often see groups of school and camp children who are at the Houston Arboretum to learn about nature. The children usually go crazy when they see my dog. Needless to say, he gets a lot of attention and compliments.

Cost
The best part about the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is that it is free. It is a non-profit sanctuary but donations are always welcome.

Tip for Dog Owners
The Houston Arboretum does not have rubbish bins on the walking trails so if your dog poops, be responsible. Pick it up and carry the bag to the front of the Arboretum and Nature Center where the dumpster is located. The Arboretum is a beautiful place and should be left as you found it.

Tip for Visitors
During the weekends the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is extremely crowded. During those time it is difficult to find a parking spot and you'll most likely have to park in the overflow parking down the street on the edge of Memorial Park. From there, you can walk but be careful because there are cyclists who don't often announce their arrival and cycle very fast. Your best bet is to go to the Houston Arboretum during the day during the week. That way you won't have to deal with crowds and you'll be able to meander at your own pace.

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is located at 4501 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX, 77024. The Arboretum is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (please note the gates close at 7:00 p.m.). To learn more, visit Houstonarboretum.org.
