My Favorite Year-Round Accessory: The Scarf

Susan Brown
Every woman has her favorite accessory, and because it is her favorite it does so many things for her - it's versatile, fun, and even comforting to wear. And so for me, a fashion-lover and accessory-lover myself, what is my favorite item? It is a lightweight scarf, perhaps a pashmina fabric. Yes, that is the best year-round accessory for me.

Where I got it

I got my favorite scarf of all (I have several) - a copper-colored pashmina one - as a gift from my husband on board a cruise ship. They are commonly sold in the gift shops on Carnival cruise ships for about $10 and are totally worth it.

How I wear it

I wear my scarf in a variety of ways. In the winter time, I can fold it a couple times lengthwise and use it as a scarf draped through my raincoat's collar. It looks really gorgeous and luxuriant. Or, in the summertime I love to use it around my neck, and then I unfold it and drape it over my shoulder in case I get cold like in an air-conditioned building.

When to wear it

A scarf is so versatile, as mentioned in the last paragraph, that you can wear it in any season. Certain scarves can even be worn pool-side as a type of pareo to cover unsightly spots on your butt and thighs!

Why it makes me feel good

It's almost like a child with their special "blankie". It's a very comforting, and yet very sexy, piece of accessory. And it comes in all kinds of colors, textures, and patterns to make it enduring and fun.

Where you can buy it

Like I mentioned, I got mine on a cruise ship but you can find them absolutely everywhere. For more lightweight, trendy ones you can visit Forever21.com and purchase some for a few bucks (I got a gorgeous dark blue one from them that I also love to death), or if you would prefer to buy it in-store, make sure to check out Target because they always have a nice selection of colors and textures.

How to care for it

Your scarf should come with a care label, but if it is silk it will most likely need to be dry-cleaned. If it is anything else, like cotton, you can hand wash it in cold water and air dry it.

So come on and join in on the scarf revolution! It's fun, versatile, and very comforting to have as your little side-kick! And look beautiful while wearing it!
