Although this series of film reviews is now somewhat dated, I still return to these reviews because in them, I developed a concept of "reading" a film that (for this sometime English major) turns out to be jarringly different from the way in which we read a book. I never felt during my tenure as film critic that I was in the business of labeling films as good or bad. In fact, I mainly wanted to muddy the view of the films, maybe focus on what works and what does not work. In short, I was functioning as a teacher and at the same time as a student. As a good student and teacher, I also include a list of useful online resources.
Most importantly, for all film critics, I had to take the word like out of my vocabulary. Whether a critic likes or dislikes a film (or a genre, such as westerns or war movies) does not matter any more than whether a surgeon likes or dislikes cancer.
For purposes of full disclosure, I was paid up-front for my articles, there is no advertising on any of the pages (except for the blog or the "General Reference Sites," for which, of course, I am not paid), and I do not get paid for page views now.

The Adventures of Tintin: Belgian comic book hero comes to America
Tintin, the ageless and never sedentary reporter, hero of twenty-four "albums" by Georges Prosper Remi (1907-1983), better known by the pen name Hergé, has never been as popular in the United States as he has been in many other countries. That is about to change, with news of a trilogy of Tintin films by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. I'll be updating my articles on Tintin, on paper and on screen, in my blog, "Tintin in America."

Wow you have certainly done more than your fair share of movie reviews.
More page love
I absolutely love this... :o)
Excellent Michael some great links, I joined Rotten Tomatoes about a year ago, a friend recommended the site from University, so thanks for the reminder. Also thanks for the reminder about the new Tin-Tin film can't wait for that one. Good post Michael.
interesting that you would put it, "...wanted to muddy the view of the films..." Reflection is something, eh! Danke! And this screenwriter didn't know you were about the films. Checking some of your reviews out, going away.
Great thanks.
I was catching up on AC commenting...have had a very busy busy two weeks..and I was almost tempted to just delete all my posts and start over..and then I began clicking on those faithful who always comment on my articles..and man, am I glad I found this one Michael. Awesome! Thank you thank you thank you! LIke Branwen..bookmarking! You are so amazingly adept and prolific on some many topics. I'm once again impressed...!!
Be still my heart! Now you're speaking to my inner wannabe film critic, Michael. And you actually got paid to do that! (((awe level rising))) Reading your article clarifies a bit abt the role of film critics. This list makes me suddenly wish I had nothing else to read but your film critiques the rest of my life! (Well, maybe I'd take breaks to actually go to a movie now & then!) So I see you didn't review "ISHTAR"?! My family holds the honor of being among the few, the proud, the brave, who actually loved that hilarious movie! We own it, dude! It has some of the funniest songs ever written for a movie...ever!
This film buff is SO grateful to you for posting these links! (I'm bookmarking your article for regular reference...) :)
